U2U2 is a rock band from Dublin, Ireland. Since their first studio release, U2 - Boy, in 1980, they have released ten other albums, including six that reached number one in the United States charts. Their latest studio release, U2 - How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, has sold over 12 million copies worldwide and won Album Of The Year at the Grammys, proving that U2 is still capable of scoring a hit album nearly 25 years after their formation.

U2 is composed of: Bono (Paul David Hewson) on vocals, and occasional rhythm guitar and harmonica; The Edge (David Howell Evans) on lead guitar, keyboards and backup vocals; Larry Mullen Jr. on drums and percussion; and Adam Clayton on bass. They are one of the only bands of their generation to have remained intact for so many years with no lineup changes.

The band originally formed in 1976 when Larry Mullen Jr. posted a bulletin in his school asking for musicians to form a rock band. The band then consisted of the four current members plus three additional guitarists, including The Edge's brother Dik Evans (later a member of Virgin Prunes). According to legend, Bono originally auditioned as a guitarist but couldn't play. He auditioned as lead vocals, but really couldn't sing. He was, however, incredibly enthusiastic about the band and was kept as a member. The extra guitarists would soon leave the band and the group would go through the names Feedback and The Hype before finally settling on U2. By 1979 U2 had their first single, U2-3, and by 1980 they released their first album, U2 - Boy. Hardcore fans will remember the bootleg "Driving to Midnight Mess on Dublin Christmas Eve" (1979)

Through the 80s, they continued to make critically acclaimed albums including U2 - War and U2 - Joshua Tree. After promising "to dream it up all over again" in the 90s, they combined their classic rock style with industrial and dance music on albums like U2 - Achtung Baby and U2 - Pop. In recent years, they've returned to a more band-centric sound with albums like U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind. A renowned live act, their current Vertigo///2005 tour is their most successful to date.
